Drive out to explore the local towns and villages in the Alpujarras, many of which come alive when other European towns are going to bed!
Try Cadiar, twenty minutes away, with its hidden backstreets of bars and restaurants, an artists' studio as well as amenities such as a pharmacy and optician, or browse the furniture stores and little local shops offering Alpujarran products.
Murtas, winding steep streets, just wide enough for the intrepid explorer in you, nestled round the large church in the crook of a sunsoaked valley, is only 15 minutes away. Drive there for a dip in the municipal pool if you fancy a change, a beer or cafe con leche in one of the Spanish bars and just sit and listen to the tolling church bell. Watch life go by as it has done for centuries. Don't miss a day trip to Granada; its fascinating history a must for every southern Spanish visitor ( and home of good winter skiing, if you're thinking slightly more out of season). Also within driving range are some of the best golf courses in Europe, as well as Marbella and Puerto Banus for the real poseurs among you - ok, us!
